Save Big with These 17 Legit Walmart Coupon Savings Hacks
We've rounded up the best Walmart hacks and listed them here!
Walmart is probably the most popular place to shop — but did you know there are some strategies you can utilize to save money and take home the best deals? Read on to learn tips to help you shop smarter at Walmart!
1. Walmart Doesn't Accept Digital Coupons
Unlike most store, Walmart does not accept digital coupons. Any coupons you use will need to be in a paper format — that's either printable coupons or paper coupons. (ie, insert coupons, peelies, etc.)
2. You Can Use BOGO Coupons at Walmart!
Walmart's coupon policy allows them to accept Buy 1 Get 1 Free manufacturer coupons, but they do have a few rules:
- Walmart will not accept a BOGO coupon with a percentage off.
- You may not use two BOGO coupons on two items to make them both free.
- You may not use a coupon on the second item from a BOGO coupon deal to get an overage.
3. Keep a Copy of the Walmart Coupon Policy
A copy of the coupon policy (either printed or bookmarked on your phone) may help you in a situation where an associate is not familiar with the policy. It makes a great reference if you do have it. You will also need to keep in mind that Walmart managers get the final say on whether or not a coupon is accepted.
4. Use Ibotta as you Shop at Walmart or on Walmart.com
Ibotta is one of our favorite cash-back apps, and Walmart consistently has more Ibotta offers than most other store. This is a nice alternative, making up for that lack of digital coupons. Just link your Ibotta account to your Walmart app for instant savings, no matter if you shop online or in the store.
5. Stack the Savings at Walmart
While you can no longer stack a coupon and an Ibotta offer, you can however work the system and stack other rebate apps with Ibotta! The very best part about all of opting to use these apps – you might find an offer for your product on several of them -- maybe even ALL of them! It’s a stacking dream! You can sometimes get very close to scoring products for nothing.
6. You Can’t Use Coupons Online at Walmart.com
Coupons are gladly accepted in stores, but there is no way to use them when you place your orders online. That means shopping in stores can be your best strategy of all. (Ibotta is sort of the "exception" and can be helpful in this scenario though.)
7. Coupon in the Walmart Clearance or Travel Sections
If you’re an expert at Walmart couponing, you can score some freebies inside the store! Here’s how:
- The $1 trial-size section at Walmart is a great place to score free products if you’ve got a manufacturer coupon. Just be aware of the fine print — ensure that the coupon doesn't exclude trial/travel-size items.
- Use coupons on clearance items. While this may take some eagle-eye shopping, it's likely to pay off in a big way.

9. Keep an Eye Out for Discounted “Best By” Dates
Produce, meat, and bakery items are all typically marked down at 8 p.m. on the day prior to their “best by” date. Those bright yellow stickers call out big savings and are still perfectly safe to serve up for dinner tonight.
10. Know the Difference Between Rollbacks and Clearances
Once an item is marked as clearance at Walmart, it can still drop in price, but it’ll never go back to its original price. Rollbacks, on the other hand, are temporary price reductions that’ll last 4 to 10 weeks before going back to its original price. Where possible, check the date each Rollback began to get an idea of how long the price drop may remain in effect.
11. Walmart Will Price Match, But Only to Walmart.com
Walmart does allow their in-store shoppers to price match, but only to the prices you see on Walmart.com. If Walmart.com’s online and in-store items are identical, you can ask the cashier to do a price match at checkout. Depending on the item though, you might have to get manager approval.
12. Walmart Clearance Price Tags Codes
While many stores have hidden codes within their clearance tags, Walmart does not. There are lots of Walmart price tag myths going around, like that prices ending in “1” means the item won’t get marked down again, or clearance prices always end in “00” but it simply is not the case. One of the few facts is that you can see the most recent price date change on the price tag, but because there’s no set markdown schedule, it’s not going to reveal to you much of anything.
13. Walmart Marks Down the First Week of Every Month
Walmart stuff might be marked down throughout the entire month, but most Walmart clearance is marked down within the first week of the month. Some stores have a dedicated clearance aisle, while others utilize end caps within sections — just plan to seek out those yellow tags at the beginning of the month.
14. Check Walmart’s $4 Generic Prescription List
You may be able to cut costs on medication at Walmart! Check Walmart’s $4 generic list to see if your prescription is included and ask your doctor to send your prescription to your local Walmart Pharmacy. If it’s on the list, you’ll pay $4 for a 30-day supply, or $10 for a 90-day supply.
15. Shop the Walmart Store Brands
You'll be able to save some dough when you shop Walmart Store Brands over name brands. The Walmart brands like Great Value, Equate, Parent's Choice, and others come with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If you're not happy, you get a full refund. It's a great way to see how they do compare before deciding to make it a regular in your household.
16. Know the Return Policy
On the fence about an item? Think it's a good deal, but you can't be sure? The Walmart return policy lets you return pretty much everything within 90 days. This includes damaged or defective items and nonperishable foods. You’ve got 60 days to return prescription glasses and 30 days to return electronics.Sign up for Walmart+
While this won't be for everyone, you'll at least want to do the math to see if it's a good fit for you and your family. Consider a Walmart+ subscription ($98 a year or $12.95 a month) and all your same-day grocery deliveries over $35 are free.
17. Skip the In-Store Walmart Black Friday Experience
Walmart offers all of their Black Friday deals online. That means you can kick back in your jammies and enjoy the savings and deals, but dodge all of that in-store chaos. It's also good to note that Walmart runs Black Friday Days twice in November (only once in stores) AND Walmart+ members get early access.
